What the clinician needs to assess
People with persistent abdominal skin excess after pregnancy or substantial weight change may consider surgery when their weight is stable and their general health permits it. Plans for pregnancy or major further weight loss matter because they can alter the result. The surgeon should assess scars from earlier operations and any abdominal symptoms before planning aesthetic reshaping.

Full abdominoplasty: Addresses a broader abdominal skin envelope and may include navel repositioning and abdominal-wall repair.
Limited or mini approach: Targets a more restricted area; the surgeon should specify what it will leave unchanged.
Abdominoplasty with liposuction: Adds treatment of selected fat deposits when appropriate, with a combined operative scope.
Discuss risk before consent
Potential complications include fluid collections, bleeding, infection, wound-healing problems, skin loss, altered sensation and unfavourable scars. Blood clots and other anaesthesia-related complications are important considerations. Ask how the team assesses your personal clotting risk and how mobility and travel will be managed; cosmetic contour should not be the only focus of the plan.
Agree the follow-up plan
Dressings, a support garment and drains may be used. Early recovery involves protecting the incision while following the team’s instructions for safe movement. Ask for practical guidance on getting out of bed, sleeping, washing and managing drains. A long-haul trip should be planned around clinical progress and individual risks, with a flexible departure date and a clear handover.
