Arm lift in Korea

An arm lift, or brachioplasty, removes loose upper-arm skin and may reduce associated fat. It is considered when the main concern is skin that hangs between the armpit and elbow. Liposuction alone can reduce fat but does not provide the same correction when significant skin excess is present.

The clinical choices

Skin versus fat

Ask the surgeon to distinguish excess skin from fat volume. The balance affects whether excision, liposuction or a combination is appropriate.

Scar placement

A meaningful reduction in skin excess may require a longer scar. Discuss how it will be positioned and how visible it may be with different arm movements.

Extension of treatment

Loose tissue may continue toward the side of the chest. Clarify the exact limits of the proposed operation.

Is this procedure right for you?

People with substantial upper-arm skin laxity after weight change or ageing may consider surgery when weight is stable and healing risk is acceptable. Skin elasticity, fat distribution and overall health matter. Patients should be comfortable with a potentially long permanent scar and able to arrange help during the period when lifting and reaching are restricted.

Exercise can improve strength but cannot reliably remove redundant skin. Conversely, an arm lift does not replace muscle development or guarantee perfectly matched arms. Limited scars may permit only limited correction. Ask how far the scar needs to extend and which neighbouring areas, such as the side of the chest, are outside the proposed treatment.

Risks and alternatives

Bleeding, infection, fluid collections, wound-healing problems, persistent swelling and unfavourable scars can occur. Sensation changes and injury to deeper structures are possible. Discuss how personal risk factors affect healing and how the team would assess new swelling or loss of function. A promise of a hidden or imperceptible scar should not replace a precise incision drawing.

Liposuction may suit excess fat when skin elasticity is sufficient. No procedure may be preferable if the anticipated scar is more troublesome than the loose skin. A more extensive body-contouring plan should be considered separately when the concern continues into the side of the chest rather than assumed to be included in an arm lift.

Before treatment

Ask the surgeon to mark the incision while you stand with the arms in different positions. Explain any previous arm surgery or swelling problems. Plan clothing that is easy to put on and help with hair washing, shopping and overhead tasks. Confirm the written schedule for dressings, drains if used and clinical reviews.

Questions patients ask

What does arm lift involve?

The operation reshapes the underside of the upper arm. The incision pattern depends on the amount and location of redundant skin and may extend from the underarm toward the elbow. A consultation should demonstrate the expected improvement with the arm both raised and resting, because the scar and contour will be visible in different positions.

How should I plan recovery?

Compression and dressings may be used, and the arm position and lifting restrictions should be specified by the surgeon. Arrange assistance for tasks that require repeated reaching or carrying. Ask how to maintain comfortable mobility without stressing the wound. Before departure, confirm incision healing and obtain clear instructions for ongoing scar care and any new swelling.

Ask at your consultation

  • Where will my scar sit when my arms are lowered?
  • How much correction would liposuction alone provide?
  • Will the treatment extend onto the chest?
  • Which everyday arm movements should I limit?
  • How will persistent swelling or wound separation be assessed?
