What the clinician needs to assess
Patients considering removal should bring their implant card, original operation report and any imaging. Pain, distortion, suspected rupture or a change in the breast require a clinical assessment. A request to reduce breast volume is different from investigating a new swelling. The consultation should establish the problem before choosing a removal technique or accepting a package quotation.

Removal alone: The implant is removed when the capsule does not need additional treatment.
Removal with capsule surgery: Selected or more extensive capsule removal is based on findings and the reason for surgery.
Removal with replacement: A new implant restores volume but continues implant-related risks and follow-up needs.
Removal with lift: Excess skin is reshaped, adding incisions and a separate recovery consideration.
Discuss risk before consent
Risks include bleeding, infection, fluid accumulation, altered sensation, poor healing, scarring and changes in breast contour. More extensive capsule dissection can have different tissue-injury implications from simple implant removal. Ask the surgeon to explain the additional benefit and risk of each component, and how unexpected findings during surgery could change the agreed plan.
Agree the follow-up plan
Aftercare depends on whether removal was simple or combined with capsule surgery, replacement or a lift. Drains and support garments may be used. Discuss incision checks, activity limits and changes in breast shape as swelling resolves. Keep copies of implant and operative records, and agree how results or delayed concerns will be handled with your local clinician after returning home.
