Breast implant removal: Risks & Suitability

Breast implant removal takes out an existing implant. Removing some or all of the surrounding scar capsule is a separate decision based on the clinical findings. Removal may be considered for personal preference, implant problems or symptoms, but the first step is an assessment of the reason for removal and the breast shape expected afterward.

What breast implant removal involves

The body forms a scar capsule around a breast implant. Some capsules remain soft, while others tighten and cause discomfort or distortion. An explant plan therefore needs to identify what is being removed: implant alone, selected capsule tissue, or a more extensive capsule procedure. Replacement and a breast lift are additional choices rather than automatic parts of explant surgery.

Who may be suitable?

Patients considering removal should bring their implant card, original operation report and any imaging. Pain, distortion, suspected rupture or a change in the breast require a clinical assessment. A request to reduce breast volume is different from investigating a new swelling. The consultation should establish the problem before choosing a removal technique or accepting a package quotation.

What the procedure cannot promise

After removal, the breast may look smaller, looser or uneven depending on its own tissue and how it has changed around the implant. Removal is not a guarantee that every symptom attributed to an implant will resolve. Avoid assuming that everyone requires the same amount of capsule surgery or a combined lift. The proposed extent should have a patient-specific explanation.

Risks to discuss before deciding

Risks include bleeding, infection, fluid accumulation, altered sensation, poor healing, scarring and changes in breast contour. More extensive capsule dissection can have different tissue-injury implications from simple implant removal. Ask the surgeon to explain the additional benefit and risk of each component, and how unexpected findings during surgery could change the agreed plan.

Other ways to address the concern

Depending on the reason for consultation, choices may include observation after appropriate assessment, removal without replacement, replacement, or removal with reshaping. When a new breast problem is present, investigation takes priority over comparing aesthetic options. A lift can address the skin envelope but also adds scars and wound-healing considerations.
