The clinical choices
Ask which scars are tethered, sharply edged, deep or raised. Several types often coexist and may need different techniques.
Ongoing inflammation can create new scars. Discuss how acne control fits with scar treatment and whether treatment should be staged.
Subcision, focal procedures, resurfacing and other options have different roles. Every proposed component should address a specific feature of the scar pattern.
Is this procedure right for you?
Your clinician should review active acne, previous scar treatments, medicines, pigment reactions and any history of raised scars. Bring photographs that show the concern in ordinary lighting and explain whether texture, shadowing or discoloration matters most. Treatment can be optional; the appropriate plan should reflect your priorities and tolerance for repeated procedures and recovery.
Complete removal of every scar is not a realistic promise. Mixed scar patterns may need different treatments and staged assessment. Improvement in color does not necessarily correct a depression, while smoothing a scar may not normalize all surrounding pigment. Ask how improvement will be recorded using comparable lighting rather than relying on selected promotional photographs.
Risks and alternatives
Risks vary with the chosen method and include bruising, infection, pigment change, scarring and uneven improvement. A combined course adds the risks and recovery demands of its separate components. Discuss your skin’s reaction to previous inflammation and how the clinician would respond if a treatment worsened pigmentation or produced an unwanted texture change.
Controlling active acne, observing scars, treating discoloration separately or choosing a focused scar procedure can be reasonable options. Some depressed scars are approached with resurfacing or needling; others may need release or a focal surgical technique. Raised scars require a different approach. A clinician should explain why a method fits the specific scar rather than the category acne scars.
Before treatment
List previous acne medicines and procedures, including isotretinoin use, and let the treating clinician assess timing and suitability. Ask which areas will be treated at the first visit and what improvement is expected from that stage. Discuss skin preparation, sun protection and the order of any combined treatments before booking several sessions in a short trip.
Questions patients ask
What does acne scars involve?
An uneven surface can include several scar patterns, while a flat dark or red mark may be a color change rather than a permanent textural scar. The examination should map the types and depth of scarring and consider skin tone and ongoing acne. A package of lasers or injections is only meaningful when each component has a clear purpose.
What affects the treatment choice?
Controlling active acne, observing scars, treating discoloration separately or choosing a focused scar procedure can be reasonable options. Some depressed scars are approached with resurfacing or needling; others may need release or a focal surgical technique. Raised scars require a different approach. A clinician should explain why a method fits the specific scar rather than the category acne scars.
How should I plan recovery?
Aftercare depends on whether the treatment involves injections, needling, laser, a peel or a focal surgical method. Obtain instructions for each component. Leave enough time to assess healing and response before escalating treatment. Protect treated skin from sun exposure as directed and seek review for worsening pain, redness, drainage or a new persistent skin change.

Acne scar treatment: Risks & Suitability
Acne scar treatment starts by distinguishing depressed scars, raised scars and residual discoloration. They do not all respond to the same procedure. A Korea treatment plan should identify each scar type, address active acne and match every proposed method to a specific problem.
