Start with the treatment goal
Tattoo lasers use specific light wavelengths to target pigment. Different colors may need different settings or devices, and a tattoo can contain several inks with different responses. Assessment also needs to distinguish ordinary body ink from cosmetic tattooing. Fading enough for a cover-up is a different goal from trying to remove every visible trace.
Laser course
A staged plan uses appropriate wavelengths and reassessment as the tattoo fades.

A limited goal may require a different endpoint than complete removal.
Other medical removal or observation
Selected tattoos may prompt a different discussion, including the scar trade-off of excision.
Comparing the trade-offs
The number of sessions and final degree of fading cannot be promised from size alone. Some inks respond less readily and residual color or a skin outline may remain. A picosecond label does not guarantee complete removal or eliminate injury risk. Ask how the plan changes if progress slows rather than buying an unlimited result promise.
Which approach fits your circumstances?
The clinician should examine the tattoo, note colors and location, and ask about age, layering, prior removal, reactions and scarring. Explain whether the goal is fading, removal or correction of cosmetic pigment. Skin tone and health history affect the risk discussion. A photograph can help arrange a consultation but may not establish pigment behavior or the full treatment plan.
