What tattoo removal involves
Tattoo lasers use specific light wavelengths to target pigment. Different colors may need different settings or devices, and a tattoo can contain several inks with different responses. Assessment also needs to distinguish ordinary body ink from cosmetic tattooing. Fading enough for a cover-up is a different goal from trying to remove every visible trace.
Who may be suitable?
The clinician should examine the tattoo, note colors and location, and ask about age, layering, prior removal, reactions and scarring. Explain whether the goal is fading, removal or correction of cosmetic pigment. Skin tone and health history affect the risk discussion. A photograph can help arrange a consultation but may not establish pigment behavior or the full treatment plan.

Explore procedure & clinicsWhat the procedure cannot promise
The number of sessions and final degree of fading cannot be promised from size alone. Some inks respond less readily and residual color or a skin outline may remain. A picosecond label does not guarantee complete removal or eliminate injury risk. Ask how the plan changes if progress slows rather than buying an unlimited result promise.
Risks to discuss before deciding
Blistering, crusting, infection, pigment change, scarring and incomplete clearance are possible. Some cosmetic inks can darken after laser treatment. Ask whether a test area is appropriate and what it can and cannot predict. Obtain instructions about a worsening skin reaction and avoid picking or treating injured skin with home removal products.
Other ways to address the concern
Leaving the tattoo, fading it for a cover-up or using a different medical removal approach may be discussed. Surgical removal is a different procedure with a scar trade-off. Creams and do-it-yourself acid methods are not equivalent to supervised laser treatment. Compare the goal and likely residual appearance, not only the number of appointments.
